Group History 2010 - 2011

Spring 2010 - Euxton Parish Council approached to discuss the idea of a communal war memorial in the village of Euxton.

Summer 2010 - Euxton Parish Council form a War Memorial Committee to explore the feasibility of the project.

Autumn 2010 - Discussions held on starting a community group which would take forward the project as the Parish Council has the power to maintain and repair but not create a memorial.

Winter 2010 - Community group takes form, first group gathering scheduled for January 2011. Research is well underway with three research assistants volunteering their time for the group.

January 2011 - A meeting held at the Euxton Parish Church Community Centre was well attended, a constitution is in the form of being made and the AGM is scheduled for February 2011.

February 2011 - The first AGM and official recognition of the group takes place, committee members are voted onto the group and a constitution is agreed, the Euxton War Memorial Group is officially started.

March 2011 - Informal meetings with local establishments show encouraging support for the project, local prison service and armed forces are organising help and fundraising. The search for land on which the monument could go is focussed on several promising locations.

May 2011 - Fundraising underway with a Family Fun Day at the Bay Horse and an auction held by Sammie Engleby.

August 2011 - Another fun day at the Bay Horse and a surprise visit to our meeting from the relatives of Joseph Knight, thank you Howard and Margaret for coming along.

September 2011 - Discussions regarding siting of the memorial are now active, the group will start the debate on how the memorial will look, the design materials and the costs. This month was our best fundraising month so far with a total of just under £600 raised.

December 2011 - Big donations towards the year end from a Family Fun Night, Military Truck pull and endurance events have helped fundraising push past £5000. Thank you to all who have helped the group throughout 2011.
